New York, NY - January 1, 2010: "Made In America." It isn't a phrase you see often, especially when it comes to luxury clothing. However, one young California brand is working to change all that, as they attempt to make "clothing quality" synonymous with the "good ole USA." It may seem like everyone touched by the California sun tries to start his or her own clothing line, inspired by that never-ending idea of the state's laid-back chic-ness. But as the sun-kissed Sjobeck boys waltzed into the WhatsWear office, Spring 2010 collection in tow, I assumed we were in for another variation on this idea of California style, but boy was I wrong. Beverly Hills, CA -April 10, 2009 - "After their debut show with BOXeight at the Los Angeles Theater (home of the recent BOXeight fashion week), Sjobeck - a group of Malibu locals - took to the runway. The collection was inspired by the cowboy grandfather of Garrett Gerson, one of Sjobeck's designers. Gerson, JesseRay, Shelly Sjobeck and Lani Lupton did a remarkable job of using Old West inspiration to create modern, youthful silhouettes.

They showed lumberjack plaids - ultra-modern but still maintaining a utilitarian ruggedness - and denim jackets in sharp-fitting combed denim from North Carolina. (All their construction and materials are made in the United States.) There was a great must-have; it's what I'm calling the sexy prairie dress, beautifully cut silhouette looked as if Christian Lacroix took the reins at Ralph Lauren - a great novelty skirt. What's more, nothing in the collection breaks $500.

The collection had something for everyone, whether it was a great dress for dinner in the city or a wrapped-up cozy sweater for grabbing frozen yogurt in the Malibu Colony. It was a very Malibu collection made with pride in the United States" - Cheyne Jackson/Beverly Hills Times Magazine

LA Weekly

Downtown Los Angeles, CA - March 16, 2009: One of the people who digs the Sahaja line is a woman who works in trend forecasting. For fall, she is predicting lots of colored denim, leather, plaid, romantic goth (not industrial), and 1990s grunge. She tells me this before the Native American-themed Sjobeck presentation. The Sjobeck line is inspired by one of the designer's grandfather, who takes a bow from his place in the audience, which gets me feeling sentimental and warm and fuzzy and hopeful about fashion as an egalitarian art form. Sjobeck specializes in denim but also has some of the sweetest, most sophisticated dresses of the bunch. There is one pouffy gray taffeta empire-waist number with a navy-plaid bust that, with a little lengthening, would suit most women. As is, it looks simply adorable on the blonde model.

November 18, 2008 - Was it Dior? Perhaps Louis Vuitton or maybe Oscar De La Renta? No, it was Sjobeck, the Malibu-based laid-back luxury lifestyle fashion line that kept Hollywood talking following LA Fashion Week. Showcasing its Spring '09 collection, Sjobeck created an extravagant fashion show with over 600 people in attendance. The event, held in Santa Monica, CA at the Victorian & Heritage Square on October 11, has received raved reviews from top buyers, press and oodles of fashionistas.

Sjobeck's vision of the Malibu lifestyle is portrayed through a laid-back luxury collection that is both red carpet-ready and perfect for a party at the beach house. High-fashion silhouettes became the foundation for using casual American spun fabrics to drape and create its signature soft, comfortable, Malibu look. Sjobeck stresses that each garment is 100% American made.

Sjobeck designers and owners, Garrett Gerson, Shelly Sjobeck, JesseRay Vasquez and Lani Lupton, drew their Spring '09 inspiration from the surrounding Malibu culture defined by laid-back attitudes, attire and lifestyles. The fashion show paralleled this concept with an extraordinarily large party. The after party lasted into the late hours of the night and was then taken over to the Viceroy Hotel. November 30, 2007, Malibu, CA - Sjobeck debuted its new "30" line to a select group of 200 buyers, clients and fashion editors at the secluded Calamigos Ranch nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. Sponsored by Shakers Vodka, Red Bull and Sjobeck retailers Gold 'N Dulcinea, the show promised a continuation of the success of the company. The line stayed true to its roots by incorporating a range of '70s-and '80s-style patterns and styles into its carefully constructed and famously long-lasting apparel. Buyers at Ron Herman recently tapped the Sjobeck line for their stores for spring 2008. (Malibu Magazine, February/March issue 2008)"Image
